I. A Brief Introduction

Physical Geography & Resources and Environments is an new major of geography science, and it former major was Resources and Environments & Urban Village Design, which has fifty years history. This major base on the theory of physical geography and resources or environments, aims to educate excellent candidates of graduates for physical geography, resource science, environmental science, and educate excellent workers for natural resource explore, land use design, ecological environment protection etc. Now, our major has more than forty teachers, including 16 full professors and 16 associate professors. The department has the authority to entitle doctoral degree in physical geography, land resource management, and geographical information system. It possesses several research platforms such as China Institute of Resource-economical & Environment-friendly Society Construction and Reform. It has also established website resources for some excellent courses including economic geography, human geography. We have Hubei’s Experiment-teaching Demonstration Center of Geography Sciences, and laboratories for physical geography process, human geography process, GIS, spatial analysis and mapping and land use & environmental change. It can also provide students chances of field work and internship in Yichang, Wuhan branch of South Surveying & Mapping Instrument Co., Ltd. Overall, students of this major will share these excellent resources here to study and grow up.

II. Educational Objectives

The objectives of this major are three folds: to educate excellent talents acquiring well theories of physical geography and capabilities to apply them into the resource explore, environmental protection and land use management, to provide excellent candidates for graduates majoring in physical geography, natural resource management, environment protection, to supply professional talents for the governments and enterprises of physical geography process research, globe change, natural resource explore, land use planning, tourism planning, environment planning, etc.

III. Basic Requirements

Graduates of this major are supposed to :

1. Master of natural geography and resource environment, basic principle, basic knowledge and basic method of solid, to understand the natural geography and resources environment specialty theory, development, application and the latest development, with multi-disciplinary knowledge related to the professional, to understand the state environmental protection, sustainable development strategy and other relevant policies and regulations;

2. Master of natural geography, resources and environmental management and other aspects of the observation, analysis and application of remote sensing, telemetry, application ability is more skilled and GIS technology, master the basic method of data query, document retrieval and use of modern information technology to obtain relevant information, with experimental design, operation, analysis, generalization ability and academic exchange ability;

3. Basic training received a good scientific thinking and scientific method, the preliminary ability of research ability and scientific collaboration has innovation consciousness.
